چکیده

This paper analyzes the spatial clustering of galaxies in the Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS). We have used the projected two-point correlation function, w(rp), to investigate the spatial distribution of the 591 galaxies with secure redshifts between 0 ≤ z ≤ 1.3 in the five CFRS fields. The slope of the two-point correlation function for the sample as a whole is γ = 1.64 ± 0.05, very similar to the local slope, and γ is therefore not strongly evolving with redshift. However, the amplitude of the correlation function decreases strongly with increasing redshift, so that at z ≈ 0.6 it is a factor of 10 lower (for q0 = 0.5) than for a similarly-selected local galaxy population, on scales 0.1 < r < 2h Mpc (q0 = 0.5). As a whole, the CFRS data is adequately represented by r0(z = 0.53) = 1.33±0.09h Mpc for q0 = 0.5, and r0(z = 0.53) = 1.57±0.09h Mpc for q0 = 0. Unless the galaxy population at high redshift is quite different from any population seen locally, an unlikely possibility, then this implies growth of clustering as described by the evolutionary parameter ǫ to be between 0 < ǫ < +2. We use observations from the CASTLES survey of gravita-tional lenses to study extinction in 23 lens galaxies with 0 < z l < 1. The median differential extinction between lensed images is ∆E(B −V) = 0.05 mag, and the directly measured extinctions agree with the amount needed to explain the differences between the statistics of radio and (optical) quasar lens surveys. We also measure the first ex...

We present two weak lensing reconstructions of the nearby (zcl = 0.055) merging cluster Abell 3667, based on observations taken ∼ 1 year apart under different seeing conditions. This is the lowest redshift cluster with a weak lensing mass reconstruction to date. The reproducibility of features in the two mass maps demonstrate that weak lensing studies of low-redshift clusters are feasible. Thes...

We estimate the relativistic binaries merger rate and redshift distribution population synthesis of an ensemble of evolving close binaries. Results of such simulations definitely depend on the cosmic star formation rate history, which is different in galaxies of different types. This leads to a difference in merger rate in spiral and elliptical galaxies, which in principle can be an observation...

The Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey has collected ∼2000 spectra taken with multi-slit masks using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (Oke et al. 1995) in two widely separated fields on the sky, each ∼1 x 1 deg 2. Most of these objects are faint field galaxies; about 10% are Galactic stars and about 1% are broad-lined AGNs. I summarize the small scale clustering...
